Start with responsibilities
Self-hosting gives you direct control over the infrastructure and software you operate. That control comes with work: updates, monitoring, capacity, network policy, storage, credentials, and recovery. A managed service moves some of that work to another operator, under specific product boundaries.
Avoid treating the choice as a test of technical credibility. A small team may sensibly buy operations it cannot staff. Another team may need direct control over a particular network, deployment environment, or workload. Both decisions should be grounded in requirements.
Separate the control plane from the workload
A control plane accepts desired configuration and coordinates changes. The workload plane runs your application processes. They can be operated together or by different parties.
With a hosted control plane and a server you bring, the dashboard may be managed while your applications still run on your own compute. Understand what happens if either side becomes unavailable, which connections are required, and who performs upgrades and recovery.
Compare the whole cost
Include provider bills, storage, backups, network transfer, observability, and the time needed to operate the system. Do not assume self-hosting is always cheaper or managed services are always simpler. Workload size, traffic pattern, support expectations, and team capacity affect the result.
Check how you export data and configuration. Understand service limits, supported protocols, architecture requirements, and the process for moving away. A low starting price says little about how the system fits your future responsibilities.
The Hakopod choices

Make a decision you can review
List your requirements, the person responsible for each operational task, and the evidence that a proposed service meets them. Include a recovery exercise and an exit plan. Revisit the decision when your workload or team changes.
Does a hosted dashboard mean the provider supplies the compute for your applications?
